PREVALENCE AND CORRELATES OF POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION IN RURAL MYSORE, INDIA

Research has found women in India to be an average 2-3 times more at risk to suffer from a Common Mental Disorder especially depression than Indian males (Malhotra & Shah, 2015). Perinatal and Postnatal are periods in a woman's life that are considered especially high risk for the development of a psychiatric disorder (Shivalli & Gururaj, 2015). Postpartum depression and perinatal depression are conditions specific to women that often goes untreated/undiagnosed in rural India. There is a lack of research on the prevalence of this condition in tribal and village communities areas surrounding Mysore, India. In effort to fortify current literature, I will be measuring and analyzing 50 postnatal women using the reliable Beck Depression Inventory-II and sociodemographic variables.
